UW-Superior

The Natural Sciences Department includes multidisciplinary programs in biology, chemistry, physics, geology, geography and geographic information systems (GIS). The curriculum focuses on using scientific inquiry as a way of knowing and applying scientific knowledge to societal issues of local, regional, and global importance. Faculty members have diverse teaching and research experiences that afford students research opportunities in the field and laboratory. Areas of specialty include microplastics research, geological and environmental research, honeybee preservation and ecology research, and more. These opportunities are often only found at much larger R1 universities, but at UW-Superior students can pursue their own original research or join studies being conducted by professors in a small, supportive environment – the ideal setting to prepare for graduate study and careers in the natural sciences field.

UW-Superior: Upward Bound, GEARS & Academic Service-Learning

UW-Superior

Current UW-Superior students within select Academic Service-Learning courses serve (or volunteer) with Upward Bound and the GEARS program. These service-learning students assist with tutoring, mentoring, etc. with the UB/GEARS youth. Upward Bound is an intensive, year-round college-preparatory program. Our mission is to assist low-income, first-generation college bound high school students in the successful completion of secondary education and prepare them academically and socially for enrollment and completion of higher education. We work to inspire students to achieve their goals in all aspects necessary to succeed in college while building an atmosphere that enhances positive self-esteem and fosters unity and collaboration. In essence, Upward Bound helps students achieve their full potential. Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness in Superior (GEARS) is a unique pre-college program that is administered, funded, and staffed in partnership with the Superior School District. Beginning in 6th grade, teacher-identified Superior Middle School students enroll in GEARS to increase their academic abilities and the number of developmental assets they encompass to actualize their current and future potential.
